How to Create a Standout MPAc Application: Essential Tips from a Current Student
Four tips to take your application to the next level
With the next MPAc round of applications around the corner, I’d like to share several tips on how best to craft your standout application that will capture the attention of the admissions team.
It all starts with tailoring your application to the UC Davis Master of Professional Accountancy program.
Here’s how you can do just that:
-
1. Don’t “Shotgun” Your Application
One common mistake many graduate school applicants make is what I like to call the "shotgun" approach. This is when applicants apply to as many schools as possible, hoping to get accepted somewhere, but without considering how each school aligns with their goals and values.
Unfortunately, this approach is easy to spot. Generic applications lack that personal touch and enthusiasm that show you truly understand and are genuinely excited about the program.
Instead, take the time to research the UC Davis MPAc program thoroughly. I had the benefit of being an undergraduate at UC Davis when I applied, so I had some insider knowledge about the campus and faculty.
However, I did further research on the program to learn about the professors, staff, and overall culture of the MPAc team. The program is incredibly well-developed, with a strong support network of professors and staff who genuinely want students to succeed. This personal insight helped me highlight why I felt MPAc was the perfect fit for me in my application.

2. Coursework and Academic Preparation
The MPAc program is structured with a set of core courses, which you can find outlined on the website.
Before starting MPAc, all candidates will need to successfully complete the four required prerequisite courses, these are: Introduction to Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting, Business Law, and Statistics. While you don’t need an accounting minor to apply, I highly recommend taking upper-division accounting courses during your undergrad years. They will help you build a solid foundation for the more advanced coursework you’ll encounter as a graduate student. If you are short on time, I suggest taking at least the Intermediate Financial Accounting series as it allows you to waive out of a core MPAc class in the Fall and Winter term for an alternative elective.
-
3. Go Beyond Your GPA and Get Involved
While there is no strict requirement for an outstanding academic record to apply, having a solid GPA will help your application stand out. Aim for a GPA of 3.2 or higher, as this will strengthen your application and allow you to waive any standardized test requirements, such as the GMAT or GRE.
In addition to your GPA, extracurricular involvement can be a great way to showcase your commitment to your field. For example, getting involved in accounting clubs like DAS (Davis Accounting Society) or VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) at UC Davis or similar organizations at your campus or in your community that will help demonstrate your leadership skills and passion for accounting.

4. Stay Calm and Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff
Finally, as the application rounds near their end, remember that it’s natural to feel some pressure, but don’t get caught up stressing over every little detail. Focus on putting together a thoughtful, genuine application that reflects your strengths and enthusiasm for the MPAc program.
Good luck, and I can’t wait to see all of you succeed in the application process!
